The Hoodwitch

The Hoodwitch
an interview with Bri Luna

Tell us who you are and what you do?

My name is Bri Luna, I am the owner and creative director for The Hoodwitch. A website and store devoted to providing Everyday magic for the modern mystic. We offer ritual tools such as organic herbs and smudges, hand selected gems and minerals, as well as metaphysical and occult books.

What drew you to the Metaphysical World and what do you consider your specialty?

I was born into a family of magical women. My grandmothers were healers, so it’s in my blood. As a child I dismissed their practices as being old fashioned, or superstitious, but as an adult I realized that their wisdom was a gift from our ancestors. I’ve always been drawn to the things that most would consider magical or mysterious. I was fascinated by the world of the unseen. My earliest childhood memories are of holding different tumbled stones and crystal filled geodes as well as  stopping to pick flowers in my grandmother’s garden, as she serenaded her roses. While growing up in Los Angeles I was always fascinated by the colorful candles, statues of saints (orishas), and the smell of burning copal in our local botanicas. I was a very sensitive child, not just knowing, but FEELING that something else existed beyond our physical senses. As a child of Venus, I am gifted in the art of love magick, the arts, and all things beautifu.

Do you have any recommendations for people who are just starting to learn about these fields?

I have an endless collection of books so I love making recommendations. Doreen ValienteLuisah Teish,Eliphas Levi, and Dion Fortune are amongst my favorite authors to recommend to people who are just starting out, but the list goes on and on. As for websites,The is an excellent place to start, along with our instagram page! I call it “visual storytelling” as I love to share information with the use of art and symbols that I feel will evoke a clear picture into the information that I’m sharing with our readers.. No matter how many books you read, nothing trumps personal experience. Get out into nature, be wild, let the Earth be your teacher. Meet people, feel their energy, see who you vibe with. Don’t join any cults,if something feels “off” it is. Allow your intuition to be your magical compass.

When you need to recharge from your work.. where do you go or what do you do?

When I’m feeling depleted or drained, I go as far into nature and away from as many people as possible. I find strength in the natural elements be it a waterfall, ameditation in the sun, or listening to the waves of an ocean.  I love taking off my shoes and burying my feet into the dirt. If I can't travel then a relaxing ritual bath infused with aromatic essential oils, and rose petals will do the trick. Anything that involves the moon, candles and burning incense.

Are their specific Incense, Candles, Essential Oils that you use... any brands or scents that are good for this time of year?

I make all of my own custom essential oil blends as for candles I use very inexpensive velas, which are just glass encased 7 day candles that you can find at your local botanica. I love the brand Diptyque as well. They are luxurious, decadent and burn for a long time and smell beautiful in your home or workspace. During the changing of seasons I like to burn white sage with lavender, copal, frankincense, myrrh, and palo santo (holy wood). Earthy grounding scents and herbs are perfect for cleansing and purification. I fell in love recently with an incense by a local company called Black Bird, it's called "Muru"

How has Social Media affected your business? Any Tips for people on this medium?

Social media has become an invaluable tool for all business owners, it is the only place where ANYONE in the world with access can connect and see what’s happening with people in places they’d otherwise never travel to. We literally have the world at our fingertips, use it wisely.

What are your current 6 month goals and how do you plan to achieve them?

This question is funny because it reminds me of that Outkast lyric which says “You can plan a pretty picnic, but you can’t predict the weather”. Life is like that, you know? I set daily goals, weekly goals, and monthly goals. . I build off each goal as I work on it, new inspirations come into my mind and can often take me into a totally different direction than where I initially started. The best ideas come from the trash.

Is there anything you are loving right now?

Fall weather, Ghost photography, The Netflix series Stranger Things, Los Angeles, creating new tarot spreads

What is your favorite tarot spread your using right now?

For daily inspiration I pull a single card, it's an excellent form of fast guidance as to what my focus should be for the day or week. When I want to go more in depth, I like the cross of truth or a spread I've shared on my site "The Self esteem spread" just to delve deeper into the root of issue. The heart of the most pressing matter always lies within ourselves so it's always better to check in with where we're at and see how we can move forward in proceeding with the situation.

What is Ghost Photography?

My Ghost Photography isn't available on the Internet as I feel it is a deeply meaningful experience that one has to see to believe. It's a personal hobby, and now passion of mine to capture in that split moment between worlds and dimensions. To be energetically open to this process and to experience what I've seen, I feel very lucky and that's really all I'd like to share about it.
