This set of prints is from a series of work that Aurora and Lisa did for a show entitled “Couplets” that was exhibited at SqFt Gallery in Nashville earlier this year. The premise for the show was that they wanted to create coordinating works. They started with the color scheme. Aurora picked one color [say pink] and then Lisa would pick a secondary color [say gray]. They also determined sizes that would match. Those were the parameters. Aurora created junk mail collages. Lisa decided to turn molecular structures of environmental toxins into doily drawings. They loved that they were both turning ugly things into pretty things. They didn't show each other what they were working on until all the pieces were finished. With no idea if the pairings would hold up or if they'd talk to one another, it was a thrill to see that not only did they name colors the same [their ochre matched!], but the compositions were incredibly complementary.
Their work is so different and yet also the same. Both show evidence of hand, contain 3D aspects [thread/streams of junk mail jutting into space], are delicate. Both usurp materials and ideas and twist them into something other.... Aurora’s work does this explosively, while Lisa’s is more quiet, but somehow the couplets make good pairings. At least we think so.
Lisa Solomon lives and works in Oakland, CA and Aurora Robson lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. They wished they lived closer. The are hoping to do another couplet show in the near future as there is something kind of nice that happens when working in tandem.
